Peter was dressed in his orange pajamas, ready for bed, when Mike entered their room. He looked pale. Something seemed to be troubling him.

“Long night?” Peter asked with a yawn.

Mike looked startled. “Pete… uh, I didn’t think you’d be awake, man.”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

“Good.”

“What do you mean good?”

Mike walked up to Peter’s bed and sat down beside him. “Would you take that nightcap off? You look ridiculous.”

“Oh, so you’re the only one around here who’s allowed to wear a hat?”

Mike smiled. “Peter, there’s something I want to show you.”

“We have a gig tomorrow.” Peter checked the watch Mike had given him. “It’s 1 o’clock in the morning.”

“It’ll only take a minute.” His tone went from gruff to an almost childlike squeek. Peter naturally couldn’t resist.

“Well, if it will only take a minute.”

Mike led Peter out of their beach house into the chill night air. Peter hesitated, considering for a moment to run back for a coat, but noticed Mike was already striding yards ahead onto the sandy beach. ‘Is this some sort of joke?’ he thought. But Mike looked resiliant, marching so steadily and with such purpose, Peter thought it best to follow.

“Peter, come on!” Mike shouted.

When Peter caught up he found Mike standing beside what appeared to be a narrow black box. “What is it?”

“It’s a phone box.”

“Why is it painted black?” Peter asked, walking around it in a bit of a hurry. He was growing annoyed.

“It’s disguised to look like a ordinary black box… a bit like our Frodis Room,” Mike responded cooly.

“Michael, we have a gig tomorrow. I’m not in the mood to hang in a…” he sized the box up again, “a miniature Frodis Room.”

“Go look inside.” Mike pushed the door ajar.

Peter stared at Mike incredulously before peeking inside. He stumbled backward. It was vast. It was very vast and very dark spare a large, glowing, cactus-shaped tube standing erect several feet away where it could not possibly be. He turned back to face Mike with his jaw dropped.

“What do you think, good buddy?”

“What is this? This is - Am I dreaming?”

“You don’t dream, remember?”

“Oh, that’s right.”

“This is my, well, it’s my second home.” Mike stroked the box with an air of familiarity. “Look, Pete, we don’t have much time!”

“Huh?”

“Wizard Glick is causing trouble around these parts again, and-“

“I’ve been hypnotized,” Peter interupted.

“No… well, not yet. Listen, I have some work to do. I’d really like it if you came along. You can be like, my companion.” He forced a hearty chuckle that instantly gave Peter some reassurance.

“I don’t know… I don’t know, Michael. What about our gig?”

“Oh, I forgot to mention. This here old box can travel through both time and space.” Peter stared at Mike for a long time. Mike smirked. “Remember all those times I went missing? I was in here. Well, I was a lot of places. Sometimes I didn’t make it back right on time. I was too busy saving all of your lives and whatnot.” With this Mike took a step inside of the box. “You coming?”

“This box… It can travel anywhere?”

“Yep.”

“In time and space?”

“Yeah!”

“And you’re using it to fight off a man named Wizard Glick?”

“Now you’re getting it!”

Peter looked across the beach. Everything looked so peaceful and normal. “I’m not wearing any shoes.”

Mike laughed. “It’s got a wardrobe.”

Peter paused. “Shouldn’t we tell Micky and Davy where we’re going?”

“Not yet, Pete. Right now I just want it to be you and me, you dig?”

“I dig,” said Peter with a smile.

“Does that mean you’re coming?”

“Alright. I’ll come. Anything for you, Michael.”

Rev, my dear. THIS IS SO ADORABLE. The little details totally make it, too - the black box reference, the explanation...
